Beauty is in the eye of the beholder….and there is a perfectly scientific reason for it too.
Not very often my son converses with me about his lessons at school. My personal life experience is, the majority of parents of teenagers learn to live with the word ‘fine.’ It’s what the teenagers say to stop you asking more questions. So, it was with sheer delight I chatted with my son when he – completely unprompted – started talking about his biology lesson.
Teenage Son: “….mum you know you said those (pointing to flowers in our kitchen) are red? Well how do you know they really are red…? We all see everything differently you know?”
Me: “….err actually yes I do know, I’m a trained psychologist and we studied perception at Uni in depth…… And working as an interior designer, quite often people can’t see what I see!”
And that’s what I love about designing (and psychology), it is always possible to create an environment that will be seen and experienced for the beauty it beholds…..as long as you take time to understand the beholder first.
So my takeaway for Beauty and the Beholder:
- Be confident in your choices. If you like it, it is beautiful.
- Don’t be afraid of asking others what THEY see. You never know, their perception may help open your eyes wider. And you may end up finding beauty somewhere new or totally unexpected.
